Prospect Park YMCA Aquatic Center
Brooklyn, NY

The Prospect Park YMCA has been serving the Park Slope Brooklyn community since 1981 and has been in its current building since 1927.  In 2000, the YMCA of Greater New York embarked on a major capital program, which involved minor renovations of the existing facility and the construction of a new, 11,130 SF aquatics center to supplement its existing 3-lane pool.  The new aquatics center is located behind the current facility on a site formerly used as a parking lot and was depressed 2-stories below street level to preserve future development rights.  Levien & Co. managed the design and construction teams on this $9.4 million project that began construction in 2010 & opened for use in July 2014.  Levien's prior aquatic facilities experience was crucial in dealing with structural challenges that included zero lot-line sheeting and shoring, underpinning of two separate adjoining structures, and long-span roof framing over the new pool designed to accommodate future floors and state-of-the-art pool filtration & mechanical systems.
